Speaking about the gambling European culture, it is impossible to forget the secret capital of the lottery – Spain. Yes, it is the birthplace of gambling and fearless players. They love to walk on sharp blades and just can’t imagine their lives without gambling. Their love for Running with the Bulls, – the traditional mass race with the bulls, is not the only reason. We are not now talking about the thousands of tourists who flock to Pamplona before the annual San Fermin festival, but we are speaking about the intrepid afisonado, who annually begin the race with huge bulls through the narrow streets of Pamplona. It's just the national love of thrills, which certainly applies to gambling.
Why is Spain called the secret capital of lottery? In fact, it's much easier than it might seem. Lottery is incredibly loved and nobody misses the chance to buy a couple of tickets before every weekend. It is not only the most popular form of gambling activities, still one of the most ancient games of the world. Spaniards committed this gamble even more than the residents of the countries from which, according to the historical facts, the game originally came.
Right to the source of excitement
Let's delve into the prehistoric atmosphere and transfer to the ancient Greek gods. The first form of lottery was described in the myths, in which the bravest of the men pulled stones out of the golden helmet. The soldier who pulled out a special stone, was honoured by the possibility to fight with Zeus.
The first real evidence of the facts and the appearance of the lottery were sealed almost simultaneously in Ancient China and the Roman Empire. The first form of lottery in China has been very similar to the modern game of Keno, and the lottery organised in Rome aimed to raise funds for municipal needs: repairing the city's buildings, roads and bridges.
In Europe, the first official lottery was held in Bruges in February 1466. The painter Jan van Eyck ‘s widow organised it in order to collect funds to help the poor. Here in Europe, there were also conducted the first lottery with digits. It was started in Holland in the 15th century.
Lotteries, like the plague, began to spread with the lightning speed throughout cities and even whole countries. Within just two decades, lottery fever gripped the whole Europe, and this has caused great concerns among the governments of the most countries. Nevertheless, all attempts to prohibit and combat gambling passion were in vain. After that the decision was made (in most of European countries) to legalise lottery and make it the state monopoly.
